The Stock Market Crash of 1869
The term “Black Friday” was first used when two investors, Jim Fisk and Jay Gould, hiked the price of gold, causing a market crash. Jim and Jay worked together to buy as much as they could of the nation’s gold, so they could later sell it at abnormally high prices later. This caused the stock market to collapse on September 24, 1869, bankrupting everyone from Wall Street barons to farmers. Farmers suffered a 50% decrease on corn and wheat value, while the stock market dropped by 20%. The effects of the crash were felt by the U.S. economy for years.
Philadelphia’s Traffic Police Myth
The term Black Friday is also believed to have first been used by Philadelphia’s traffic police in the 1950s to refer to the day between Thanksgiving and the Army-Navy Game. The day was characterized by chaos that was caused by hordes of suburban shoppers and tourists who flooded the city a day before the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year.
Not only would the traffic police not be able to take a day off, but they would also have to work extra hours to control the additional traffic and crowds. Shoplifters would also take advantage of the situation to steal from the stores, adding to the law enforcement headache.
