What is a Tapanga Machete?
A Tapanga Machete is a type of a machete with a broad blade and a straight cutting edge with only the faintest curves at the very end of the blade. The back of the blade is also nearly straight and curves towards the end to widen the tip of the machete. Tapanga machetes nearly resemble Panga machetes; the only difference is that they do not have a point like their counterparts. Tapanga machetes are ideal of chopping and cutting a wide variety of substances, meaning that these machetes are a perfect option when clearing out an area you plan to camp in or trail-blazing through the woods.
History of the Tapanga
Tapanga machetes are believed to have originated from South and Eastern Africa. The name “Tapanga” may have an etymological background from Swahili language but it is not named after the Panga fish. Tapanga machetes are also very common in the Caribbean region. The blade measures 16 to 18 inches in length and features a backside that is very broad.
The upper part of the blade which is sharpened is usually inclined. The shape of the blade provides strong chopping power by having a concentrated force. The blade is front weighted to make ensure there is enough chopping power.
